    This Indenture made this twenty sixth day of April In the Year of Our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and fifteen, and in the thirty ninth year of the Independence of the United States of America between Alexander Stringer of the County of Laurens of State aforesaid of the one part and Charley Moore James Stringer, Nancy Spivey Stringer, Littleton Spivey Stringer and Alexander Stringer Junior (children of the said Alexander Stringer) of the State of county aforesaide of the other part. -- that the said Alexander Stringer for consideration of the love and natural affection -- bears towards -- above named children --- --- ---- consideration have given -- --- and by the -- present do give -- -- -- and confirm unto the said Charley Moore James Stringer, Nancy Spivey Stringer, Littleton Spivey Stringer and Alexander Stringer Junior and their -- assigns in equal proportion, the following Negro Slaves and their increase, namely Philos, a woman about forty six years old and Penny her child about eleven years old, also Eliza a Girl about fourteen years old, which said negro Slaves and their increas as aforesaid I hereby warrant and defend unto my four above named children and their heirs or assigns in equal proportion as aforesaid, to be received and divided by and among them as herein after mentioned, I the said Alexander Stringer (the Doner) as the natural guardian of my above named chidlren, am to hold possession and enjoy the profits of & from the labors of the said Negro Slaves during my natural life, & at my death, or at the time when the above named Littleton Spivey Stringer arrives at the age of twenty one years, which will be on the twenty fourth day of April in the year of Christ Eighteen hundred thirty four provided that shall not happen before my death, then and at that time the afore mentioned Negro Slaves together with their increase is to be equally divided between my said four children their heirs or such of them as may then be in life. Stringer owned 12 slaves. It is likely that this was the estate of Alexander Stringer, Sr. He had close family members living in Jackson Parrish, Louisiana, and it is probable that they had custody of the slaves.13

  • Death*: He died on 15 March 1860 at Jackson Parish, Louisiana, "Died, Alexander Stringer Sr, on March 15 last, at his residence in Jackson Parish, La. He was age 76, born and raised in North Carolina, although he moved to Georgia while young. At age twenty-five he joined the Baptist church in Georgia. Later he moved to Mississippi and from there to Jackson Parish, La. in 1846. Prior to that time, he had lost his second wife and shortly afterwards married Mrs. S.E. Coon. She died in 1855 and in 1857 he married his fourth wife, Sarah S. Booker. He had been a preacher for about twleve years and was buried in the church yard at Zion's Rest."5,14
