- Anecdote: "In a log cabin home, spacious in those days with it's four large rooms and a broad hall between, settled comfortably among oak and sycamore trees in Jackson Parish, LA, Belle Stringer was born on March 16, 1858. She was the sixth of nine children in the family. She too was only eight when her father died leaving her mother to manage the home and to rear the children, but theirs was a home of plenty. There was much livestock, a plantation worked by slaves and a smokehouse and cellar always filled with fine meats and fruits. The Civil War cam along, to bring despair to this home as it did to all other southern homes of that day. Belle had heard her parents and older brothers and sisters talk of the dreaded coming of the Yankees. The eldest brother was away seeing Army service. At last, one day while the father was on the plantation with the negroes, theYankees came. The mother called her own children and all the little negro children into the house. The family didn't fear for their jewelry for that had benn buried under thesmokehouse floor for several days before. The father came to the house and told them not to be afraid, but to give the men anything they asked for. He then walked out to the well where the strange men stood drinking. They had unsaddled their horses and turned them into the big corral. Mr. Stringer spoke to them, greeted them, in a friendly way and shook hands with them. Even with this courtesy, the went on th the smokehouse, took away fine hams and shoulders, went to the lot and killed a milk cow, stayed around the place for a few hours until their horses were rested and themselves refreshed, then rode away to a neighboring place where they were not so wll treated--here they destroyed much personal property, even ripping open the feather matresses. When Belle was yet a young girl, her mother came to Texas, Anderson Co, to make her home. Here the Stringers knew the pleasures of a comfortable living, and although schools were few and of short terms, the Stringer children had the best. She married Augustus Adophusr Locklar on June 15, 1876. From Anderson Co to Navarro, Calahan and Bosque Co.s in Texas and thirty-two years ago they moved to Beckham Co., near Sayre, OK to file on some land. Then to Greer Co. After 18 years of farming there, the moved again living in Elk City and Devol, then to KS for a short time. While living in Devol, Belle had a srtoke of paralysis. She was taken by her dau, Mrs Albert Baggett, to Marlin Texas for treatment. Mr Locklar come to Tipton and built the home they now occupy."5
- Pension*: She applied for a pension based on her deceased husband's service in the Confederate Cavary on 18 June 1940 at Tillman County, Oklahoma.11
- Anecdote*: Newspaper account of her 100th birthday in Locklar file. Following is the text from the article:
Honor Bell Locklar on 100th Birthday [title]
The one hundredth birthday celebration of Mrs. Belle Locklar on Sunday, March 16, brought many relatives and friends to her former home in Tipton to congratulate her upon the occasion.
Attending the turkey dinner at noon at the Locklar home were nearly 40 relatives, including her three children, 4 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.
Approximately 164 guests registered at the open house held from 2-5 p.m. in the afternoon.
Mrs. Locklar had come to Tipton 35 years ago from Sayre, where the family had homesteaded in 1889. She was born on March 16, 1858 at Big Caney, La., and at the close of the Civil War, when Belle was eight years old, moved with her family to Kerens, Texas, where she was reared and educated.
At the age of 17, she was married to August Locklar at Palestine, Texas, and the couple had nine children, three of who are still living. They moved to Oklahoma in 1899.
For the last two years, Mrs. Locklar has made her home in Frederick with her daughter, Mrs. Pearl Wearmouth. Her other living children are Henrey Locklar of Tipton and Mrs. W.A. Mathis of Muleshoe, Texas. Mrs. Locklar is in fairly good health, and although her sight and hearing are somwhat impaired, she enjoys visiting with friends.
She has been a member of the First Baptist church for many years, but is unable to attend services as often as she desires because of her hearing.
Mrs. Locklar can recall incidents in Civil War days when federal troops invaded her childhood home in Louisana, taking away the family's supply of meat stored in the smokehouse and slashing the feather beds.
One hundred red rosebuds were sent Mrs. Locklar Sunday by friends and acquaintances in Tipton and were used in several bouquets.
A feature of the reception in the afternoon was a three-tiered cake decorated with pink roses and green leaves and the inscription "One Hundred Years." Atop the cake was an arbor in which sat a small doll dressed in old-fashioned bonnet and dress.
Great granddaughters of the centenarian presided at the punch and cake service. They wer Mrs. Jack Shuster of Muleshoe, Texas, and Miss Evelyn Moran and Miss Marilyn Moran of Chickasha. Others, Mrs. James Green of Dallas, Texas, and Miss Joann Moran of Chickasha, registered names of guests.
On display was the old family Bible in which was recorded the birth of Belle Stringer on March 16, 1858.
Mrs. Locklar's children and their spouses, Mrs. and Mrs. Henry Locklar of Tipton, Mrs. Pearl Wearmouth of Frederick, and Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Mathis of Muleshoe, Texas, and the following relative and friends from out of town were present:
Mr and Mrs. Bert Mathis and son David, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schuster, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Schuster and children Debbie, Kathy, and Alec, and Mrs and Mrs. Cecil Tate, all of Muleshoe.
Also, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bob Bowden and daughter Cindy of Houman, La., Mr. and Mrs. James E. Green and Dirk of Dallas, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Gardner and E.L. Brandenburg of Oklahoma City, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne C. Following is a Transcription of Memorial Service Program for Interment of Cremation Ashes
In Loving Remembrance of Peggy Joyce Paul & William Elston Tramel
(BRENDA)
We have gathered here to remember loved ones,
Peggy Joyce Paul: our sister, our niece, and our cousin and
William Elston Tramel, our brother, our cousin, and our uncle
We come to give thanks for their lives,
For the times we were able to share with them
And for the memories that we treasure.
We come to commit their ashes to the earth
in this tranquil place of memories
And to comfort one another in our grief.
(UNCLE CAREY—PAPA)
Song: “As the Life of a Flower”
(DEAN)
Peggy Joyce Paul was born December 5, 1952. She was the second child of Noma and William Paul, and the youngest grandchild of James and Verna Tramel.
Peggy’s life was full of pain and challenges, as she fought several debilitating illnesses, but still she found joy in life--in her pet cat, her square-dancing, and her writing.
On the 9th of March, 2005, with no warning, an enlarged heart took Peggy’s life. She was only 52 years old.
As the family went through her personal papers, they found several inspirational poems and articles that she had saved. Her sister Janet has asked us to read one of those verses today.
(LINDA)
My Attitude
I Promise Myself
To be so strong that nothing can disturb my peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person I meet.
To make all my friends feel that there is something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make my optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature I meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of myself that I have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the pressure of trouble.
My Attitude is my life, through Christ.
(DANNY)
William Elston Tramel was born January 19, 1914 in Mangum, Oklahoma. He was the 4th of 6 children born to James Dennis Tramel and his wife Verna. He grew up in Oklahoma and Texas and he served in the United States Army during World War II. Later, he moved to California, where he worked for many years as a painter for the County of Los Angeles. He married Mary Elizabeth Evans on December 16, 1961. They were married for 40 years until her death in 2002.
Uncle Elston was healthly, strong, and independent for most of his years, and he was even able to drive until the last year of his life. His heart became weaker and weaker with age, and he passed away on the 5th of July, 2005, on his dear wife’s birthday. He was 91 years old.
(UNCLE CAREY—PAPA)
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
--Psalms 23
(BRENDA)
We have entrusted our loved ones to God’s mercy
And now we commit their mortal remains to the ground;
Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
Precious ones from us have gone
Voices we loved are stilled
Places are vacant in our homes
which never can be filled.
